Murray State was eliminated on the opening day of play at the OVC Championships, dropping its quarterfinals match 1-0 Thursday night against Morehead State at Houck Field in Cape Girardeau, Mo.
The Eagles scored the lone goal of the match on their first corner kick attempt of the night, taking the lead on a header by Brittany Kiracofe from the middle of the box on the corner from Stephanie Gildehaus.
Murray State responded immediately, driving possession into the Morehead zone where Sophie Hargreaves found an open Shauna Wicker for her header into the back of the net, but the goal was disallowed as the assistant referee on the far side of the field ruled offsides.
Later in the final minutes of the match, Hargreaves fed a through ball pass to Jenelle Cunningham through the Morehead defense, but her quick shot was wide left of the near post on what would prove to be the last Murray State chance of the night.
Racers goalkeeper Yi Du made a number of tremendous saves throughout the match, stopping Morehead on a pair of breakaways and keeping MSU in the game for the entire 90 minutes.
The Racers fought through an early Morehead rush in the first third of the half, with Du stepping up at the eight minute mark to stop the first shot of the night in the center of the goal.
Murray State put together a three shot stretch halfway through the half on its first scoring chance of the game, starting off on a shot from Amber Hanson that was blocked clear from 18 yards out. Shauna Wicker's header on the ensuing corner was cleared wide and Sophie Hargreaves' attempt on the next corner was saved.
Maja Nordahl had another close attempt for the Racers toward the end of the opening period, flicking a corner kick from just outside the six-yard box with her right foot clear of the near post.
Du came up big again in the final minute of the period, keeping the match scoreless as Morehead pushed up the field on a counter-attack on a 4-on-1, making a save on a wide open shot from the middle of the field.
The loss was the second 1-0 defeat to Morehead State in the last week, as they dropped their second to last match of the season in Morehead last Friday.
