Murray State men's basketball coach Steve Prohm announced the signing of Zabius “Zay” Henderson (Monroe, La.) and Erik McCree (Winter Garden, Fla.).
The pair begin the 2012 signing class for the Racers as both will be freshman in the fall at Murray State.
ZAY HENDERSON – NEVILLE HS – MONROE, LA.
Zay Henderson (6-8, 225) is a forward from Neville High School in Monroe, La.
Last season as a junior in 2010-11, he averaged 17 points and 14 rebounds, three blocks per game in leading the Tigers to the Louisiana Class 4A State Tournament and a 28-5 record.
Henderson was named Louisiana Class 4A All-District II.
As a sophomore in 2009-10, he was part of an outstanding team at Neville that was 28-11.
“Zay comes from a great program and from a basketball-rich area in Monroe, La.,” Prohm said. “With Ivan Aska part of our senior class this season, we were looking for a quality front-court player to come in and contribute immediately. Zay will have the chance to step in and contribute on both ends of the court. He plays hard and will continue to get better.”
Henderson's coach is Phillp Craig.
“Zay has been a huge part of the success we've had over the last two seasons,” Craig said. “He's a great shot blocker and the best thing that I can say about Zay as a player, is he's very consistent. He comes to work hard every day. His best days are ahead of him, he has a lot of potential and we're excited he's getting this opportunity at Murray State.”
Henderson played AAU basketball for the Jackson Tigers out of Jackson, Miss.
ERIK MCCREE – WEST ORANGE HS – WINTER GARDEN, FLA.
Erik McCree (6-7, 215) is a forward from West Orange High School in Winter Garden, Fla.
Last season as a junior in 2010-11, McCree scored 15 points and grabbed eight rebounds per game for the Warriors who were 19-9.
McCree earned post-season honors for the 19-team Orlando Metro Conference and he was named to the Fort Meyers Christmas Tournament Team.
“I'm excited to have Erik join us, I got the chance to see him a lot and he has a ton of versatility,” Prohm said. “He'll be able to play a big wing or a forward spot for us. He can score in a lot of different ways. He can score in the paint and can go out and hit a three. I'm looking forward to having Erik join our program.”
His coach at West Orange is Eric Jones.
“Erik is a versatile player and can do a lot of things well on the court,” Jones said. “In the last two seasons he has played power forward and wing for us. The best part of his game is he can take it to the basket and create scoring chances. His work ethic is excellent and he's a solid individual and a great teammate. I think he's going to be an excellent fit at Murray State and he's looking forward to being a Racer.”
