Murray State softball concluded the fall 2011 season with four straight wins at home, defeating Rend Lake 7-0 and 19-2 before picking up 15-1 and 5-2 wins against Mid Continent to close out competition.
It gave the Racers six straight wins to close out the short season, as they picked up victories against Alabama and Western Kentucky earlier in the month.
"The fall season gives us a chance to get out there and see what we have and play against other teams and put into practice what we've been working on," head coach Jay Pyron said. "I thought there were some good things happening that we saw this fall."
The Racers had a nubmer of strong performances in their eight games this fall, including all four pitchers who appeared in four games and tossed at least nine innings posting an earned run average at 2.25 or lower.
MSU hit for .357 as a team, including five individuals that hit for a .400 batting average or highter.
"What I've really liked and been pleased with so far is where out leadership is right now," Pyron said. "The team attitude and mentality is in a good place and our juniors, seniors and even the younger players have done a good job of stepping up and leading by example but also setting the tone and expectations for what our program is about. That was something that I was paying a lot of attention to after losing seniors for the first time as a program and what gap that was going to leave for us to fill but I couldnt be more pleased with the steps we've made.
"This is the most experience we've ever had, its the first time we've had third year division I players and we're starting to see that experience on the field. We're pleased with that and feel it's a really big strength of ours."
