The Murray State Racers take their 9-0 mark to the FedEx Forum for a Sunday 5 p.m. clash with the Memphis Tigers. The game marks the first between the two since 2002 as the Racers look for their first win against the Tigers since 1994.
The Racers enter the game (as of Dec. 9) as one of only 12 teams in NCAA D-I that haven't lost this season. MSU scored a pair of wins last week to keep their early season run going with a 70-59 win (Dec. 1) at Western Kentucky and a 75-58 win Sunday at home against Dayton.
The Racers can thank their success this season to a combination of great three-point shooting and great effort in defending it. MSU started the week 16th in the nation in percentage (.431) and 66th in threes per game (7.7). MSU is 18th in the nation defending the three-point shot in holding opponents to 25 percent.
Junior Isaiah Canaan is nearing the 1,000 point mark and will be the 38th member of the MSU club when he gets there. Canaan is scoring 20.3 points per game which ranks him first in the Ohio Valley Conference and 23rd in NCAA D-I. He has won two Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Week awards and was named to the Lou Henson Award Watch List in the preseason. Canaan's career-high 36 points helped MSU win the Great Alaska Shootout in double overtime over Southern Mississippi (Nov. 26).
New MSU head coach Steve Prohm is part of 52 first-year head coaches in NCAA D-I and 24 who are head coaches for the first time. Prohm was named coach (May 23) after Billy Kennedy took the head coaching job at Texas A&M.
Prohm's 9-0 start is tied for the top mark among the 15 coaches in Racer history for the best start to a first season. Prohm ranks with Tevester Anderson (9-0 in 1998-99).
Murray State's mark tied with Syracuse and Illinois as the first teams to reach 9-0.
The Racers and Creighton are the only two teams not from the power conferences to make it this far without a loss.
