“It is always great to beat Western Kentucky,” said head coach Mel Purcell. “They have always been a great rival for Murray State and I really miss having them as a conference opponent.”
Craig Kirchgessner and Caleb Ball from WKU defeated seniors Luke Milicevic and Renaldo Domoney (8-4) at No. 2 doubles, as the first doubles set to finish. However, senior Mason Johnson and junior Jose Berardo were able to earn a 9-7 win over Currie Martin and Lance Freeman at No. 3 doubles to force the tie for the doubles point. Junior Jorge Caetano and sophomore Joao Camara then earned a 9-8 win at No. 1 doubles over Arul Selvan and Robert Whitmer to give MSU the doubles point.
The Hilltoppers then earned two of the first four singles points to finish, taking No. 3 and No. 2 singles. Caetano defeated Kirchgessner at No. 1 singles (6-3, 7-6) and Milicevic earned a 6-4, 6-2 win over Martin in the first four singles sets to finish, giving the Racers a 3-2 advantage. Freshman Arthur Valle then took a 6-4, 6-2 decision from Whitmer at No. 5 singles, securing the win for MSU. Johnson was the final player to finish his singles set, earning a 6-1, 6-2 win over Ball at No. 6 singles.
“We played well today,” Purcell added. “Winning the doubles point is also huge in tennis and to earn a win on the road over a strong team like WKU was a great confidence builder for the rest of the season.”
The Racers will have a long break before returning to the court, as their next scheduled match is set for March 1 against Kentucky in Lexington, Ky.
