UNC Asheville used a five run first inning to open up an early and then broke the game wide open in the late innings to hand Murray State a 15-5 defeat Saturday afternoon in the second game of a three-game series at Greenwood Field.
The Bulldogs (2-0) struck in the first inning for the second-straight day as the first six hitters reached in the five-run inning. A couple of Breds errors helped fuel the rally, but UNCA got run-producing base hits from Patrick Koontz, Grant Gajdosz and Mike Vaughn.
The Breds (0-2) got a run back in the second as Cody Larson singled off the leg of the pitcher with one out. Drew Pixley followed by blooping a double into right field and Elliot Frey drove in Larson with a sacrifice fly to right field.
MSU continued to creep back into the game in the third as Wes Warren drew a leadoff walk and went to second on a groundout. After a wild pitch, Larson drove in the runner with a groundout to the right side. Pixley started the rally again with a bunt base hit to third. A wild pitch moved the runner to second and Frey plated the runner with a single to right field.
UNCA pushed a run across in the sixth as Danny Baatz singled to third base and stole second. Koontz drove in the runner with a bloop single over the head of the shortstop.
The Bulldogs broke the game back open in the seventh as a pair of walks and a fielding error loaded the bases ahead of Eli Miller's bases-clearing double to left center. UNCA helped seal the victory by adding six runs in the bottom of the eighth inning.
The Breds did not go quietly in the ninth as Nick Paradossi started the inning with a single to right center. A pair of walks to Paul Ritzheimer and Travis Isaak loaded the bases with one out. Jacob Rhodes scored a run with a base on balls, and Colton Moore did the same two batters later.
Dillon Tabar (1-0) picked up the victory in relief after allowing two runs on four hits over two innings. Luke Shuemaker (0-1) took the loss after allowing five runs on nine hits and five strikeouts over four innings. He settled down after a rough first inning and did not allow a run over the final three innings.
Pixley led the offense with a pair of hits, while Frey drove in a pair of runs.
The two teams close out the three-game series tomorrow at noon.
