Score Sheet
The Racers earned wins from junior Ashley Pierson at No. 5 singles and freshman Carla Suga at No. 6 singles. Suga also teamed with fellow freshman Taylor Vick at No. 3 doubles.
“Ashley Pierson and Carla Suga have been playing very consistent singles matches this season,” said head coach Connie Keasling. “Carla and her doubles partner Taylor Vick have also been very consistent for us.”
Pierson dropped her first set of the match 6-0 and then rebounded to earn 6-2, 6-2 wins in the final two sets against Rachel Pierce. Suga earned a straight victory (6-3, 6-2) over Andrea Steen-Rosten.
The teams played the singles matches first due to weather, so the decision was final before the doubles, but all three were played. The Trojans earned the point, but Suga and Vick earned an 8-2 win at No. 3 doubles over Pierce and Nathalia Garay.
“We played more consistently in our first matches outdoors,” Keasling added. “I hope that we will continue to improve with each of the matches we have on the road this month.”
MSU will return home, but will continue their road trip for most of the month when they head to Alabama next week for the start of eight day trip. The Racers will start the trip with their first conference match of the season in Jacksonville, Ala., when they face Jacksonville State, March 10.
“Jacksonville State is like the teams that we played this week so those matches have done a good job of preparing us for our conference schedule.”
