The Murray State Racers are ready to go for their third straight title at the 2011 Ohio Valley Conference women's golf championships this week at GreyStone Golf Club in Dickson, Tenn.
The Racers won both the 2009 championship and then last season in 2010 when the event was also held at GreyStone. The Racers have won the OVC prize eight times under Coach Velvet Milkman who has been named OVC Coach of the Year following each championship.
“When you go to the OVC Tournament you look for your seniors and upper classmen,” Milkman said. “Caroline Lagerborg and Morgan Cross have been there, they've won the title and played in the NCAA Tournament and they've been very good this week about sharing that with the rest of our team.”
When looking at season statistics, the Racers are third in the OVC in stroke average with a score of 308.5, but with good play recently at the Ole Miss Intercollegiate (April 3) where MSU was 10th in a deep field of teams and the EKU Lady Colonel Classic (April 11), they've scored on average 304.3 in the last two events.
Here is a look at how the MSU team lines up by class.
Caroline Lagerborg (Sr.) Alta, Sweden
Morgan Cross (Jr.) Elizabethtown, Ky.
Scoring Avg: 78.3 (15th OVC)
Notes: Won NewWave Communications (March 1) with a 76. Has three top-10 finishes in the spring including a fourth place showing at the EKU event (April 10) with a collegiate low round of 2-under par 70.
Alexandra Lennartsson (So.) Nykoping, Sweden
Delaney Howson (Fr.) Newmarket, Ontario, Canada
The OVC Championship will be held for a second straight season at the GreyStone GC. The par-72 course will play 6,049 yards and have eight teams vying for the title including the Racers, Austin Peay, Eastern Illinois, Eastern Kentucky, Jacksonville State, Morehead State, Murray State, Tennessee State and Tennessee Tech.
