OVC Women's Golf Championship - Racers Runner-Up Morgan 3rd
4/23/2011 5:36:37 PM | Women's Golf
The Murray State Racers fell short of their quest for a third straight Ohio Valley Conference Women's Golf Championship Saturday when they finished second at GreyStone GC in Dickson, Tenn., while junior Morgan Cross finished third and was named to the OVC All-Tournament Team.
The Racers started the day eight shots off the Eagles' pace and did cut the deficit to four heading to the final nine holes, but ended up finishing 14 shots back with scores of 297-310-297=904.

“They had a great tournament, I'm very proud of their effort,” MSU head coach Velvet Milkman said. “All of our team really played well, especially Morgan to finish second and make the all-tournament team.”
“Also it's a bitter-sweet moment for our senior Caroline Lagerborg,” Milkman added. ”You
know you're happy to see her graduate and start another part of her life, but she was a competitor and today finished the last three holes one-under par.”
Cross, a junior from Elizabethtown, Ky., finished three shots off the lead with scores of 72-77-72=221 and was named to the OVC All-Tournament Team.
MSU's Delaney Howson and Alli Weaver shared seventh place in the event. Howson had scores of 75-79-73=227, while Weaver carded scores of 76-78-73=227. Alexandra Lennartsson placed 13th with scores of 74-76-83=233, while Caroline Lagerborg placed 25th with rounds of 79-83-79=241.
Morehead State's Emma Jonsson was the medalist of the event with scores of 70-73-75=218.
After the Eagles and Racers, Jacksonville State finished third at 924, with Eastern Kentucky (932), Austin Peay (948), Eastern Illinois (978), Tennessee Tech (981) and Tennessee State (1064) rounding out the field.
Morehead State is the first team other than Murray State and Jacksonville State to win the OVC title since Tennessee Tech in 2001. The Eagles are only the fifth team in OVC Women's Golf history to win the title.
The Racers, who lead the OVC with eight championships, were going for their third straight title after taking the tournament in 2009 and 2010. Losing only one senior from their starting five, the Racers have a bright future.
“When you consider we had three players (Howson, Lennartsson and Weaver) who were playing this course for the first time, we held up very well and were right there today going into the final nine holes.” Milkman said. “I'm excited about what we have coming back for next season.”
The GreyStone GC was playing 6,020 yards and to a par of 72 and will also host the OVC Women's season ending event in 2012 and 2013. Greystone is also the host of the OVC men's event starting Monday and running through Wednesday.
