2010-11 OVC Golf Awards
Murray State senior Cameron Carrico earned Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Year honors Wednesday after a unanimous vote by the league's head coaches.
Carrico is the second straight MVP winner for the Racers' men's golf program and ninth overall following Nick Newcomb who won the award in 2010.
“Being the OVC Player of the Year was a goal of mine when I started my senior season and I thank the coaches for honoring me with this award,” Carrico said. “All season I tried to play my best every round and help my team out.”
MSU Head Coach Eddie Hunt, who has now coached two players to the top award in OVC Golf, had special praise for his senior from Owensboro, Ky.
“Cameron has been a special young man ever since he came here as a freshman in 2008 and won the OVC Freshman of the Year award,” Hunt said. “He was simply fantastic this season and I'm happy for him to win the award.”
CARRICO'S STRONG RESUME
Carrico led the OVC in stroke average in the 2010-11 season at 71.1 which was also in the top-10 in all of NCAA D-I golf. His 3.96 average on par four holes was fourth in the nation. In 32 rounds this season, he scored par or below 24 times and had eight top-10 finishes including two wins. At the OVC Championship he was only one shot away from joining what would've been a four-way tie for the title. He was named to the All-OVC First Team marking the fourth straight year he was named to the all-league team.
Carrico joins a list of some of the great players to tee it up for the Murray State Racers. Bill Graham was MSU's first OVC MVP when he won it in back to back seasons in 1962 and 1963. Ron Acree followed in 1965, with Chris Piggott taking the award in 1971. Chris Carlson was the winner in 1987, while Adam Grogan earned it in 1996. Brandon Henson was the MVP in 2001, before Newcomb won it in 2010.
OVC CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL ROUND RAINED OUT
With spring thunderstorms dumped more than six inches of rain on the GreyStone GC after Tuesday's second round, it made it impossible for the 54-hole event to be finished on Wednesday. The tournament was called early Wednesday morning meaning the 36-hole scores stood as final.
The Racers finished third in the field of nine teams with scores of 290-290=580, behind second place UT Martin at 579 and champion Jacksonville State at 561. Eastern Kentucky was fourth at 582, while Austin Peay (585), Tennessee Tech (591), Tennessee State (594), Eastern Illinois (596) and Morehead State (599).
Murray State, who was going for two straight titles after winning in 2010, posted their fourth straight top-3 finish and their seventh in the 10 years of the Eddie Hunt era and he has coaches 11 OVC All-Tournament team players including Carrico.
MSU's Hunter York, a sophomore from Hardin, Ky., earned a spot on the All-OVC Newcomer Team.
