Senior hits second grand slam of the season
Zach Noonan helped capped off a six-run first inning by delivering his second grand slam of the season as Murray State rebounded from a series-opening loss to hand Jacksonville State a 12-6 defeat in the second game of the doubleheader at Johnny Reagan Field.
Noonan went on to finish the day by going 3-for-4 with six RBIs. He becomes the second player in as many years to hit two grand slams in one season, after Wes Cunningham did it in 2011. Noonan's other grand slam came as part of a 6-for-6, seven RBI day against North Dakota State.
The Breds (13-16, 4-3 OVC) got the bats going in the first inning as Ty Stetson singled through the right side and went to third on Brandon Elliott single through the left side. Travis Isaak followed with an RBI single to right center, before the second run scored on a throwing error by the first baseman. Paul Ritzheimer was hit by a pitch to load the bases for Noonan to hit a no-doubt grand slam to left field.
MSU continued to swing the bats in the second as Isaak singled down the left-field line and went to second on a wild pitch. A Jacob Rhodes single through the right side put runners on the corners. Brandon Eggenschwiler plated Isaak with a sacrifice fly and Ritzheimer singled to left field. Noonan came through again with a two-run double into the gap in left center. Walks to Elliot Frey and Stetson loaded the bases and Elliott followed with a two-run single to left center.
The Gamecocks (21-10, 5-3 OVC) got their offense going in the third as three-straight singles plated a run before Kyle Bluestein plated three with a home run to left field.
A pair of singles and a walk loaded the bases for JSU in the fourth and Ben Waldrip plated a run with a bloop single to right field.
The Gamecocks got one more run across in the fifth on a Michael Bishop double down the left-field line. They would later load the bases with two outs, but Jake Donze got out of the jam by getting the league's top hitter, Ben Waldrip, on a called third strike on a curve ball.
The Breds got back into the scoring column in the fifth as Isaak walked and went to second on a wild pitch. With two outs, Ritzheimer delivered an RBI single to right field.
Donze (5-1) picked up the complete-game victory after allowing six earned on seven strikeouts. Donze was at his best when he was in trouble as he was able to end the fifth and sixth innings with strikeouts with the bases loaded. Bradley Raulston (2-1) took the loss after surrendering nine runs, eight earned, on nine hits over 1.1 innings.
Elliott finished game 2-for-5 with a pair of RBIs, while Isaak went 2-for-3 with an RBI and three runs scored. Cody Larson went 3-for-4, and finished the doubleheader going 6-for-7 with three RBIs.
The two teams close out the three-game series tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. at Reagan Field.
