Top 10 FCS Running Backs
Murray State running back Mike Harris burst onto the scene last year and had one of the best performances a Racer running back has had in recent years. He will not be able to sneak up on defenses this season as Harris was named one of the Top 10 running backs according to The Sports Network. This is the third of an eight-part series featuring the best Football Championship Subdivision players at various positions.
Harris (Tulsa, Okla.) missed the better part of four games, but still nearly became the first 1,000-yard rusher at MSU since 2002. He finished the year with 904 yards and 10 touchdowns on just 139 carries. He also added 166 yards and a touchdown on 28 receptions. His 100.4 rushing yards per game ranked 21st nationally.
In just his second game for the Racers, Harris rushed for 119 yards and a touchdown, while also catching five passes for 45 yards and a touchdown, as MSU defeated UT Martin. It would be the first of his four 100-yard rushing performances on the season, tieing him for ninth place on the Racers single-season list.
Harris had a breakout game against Missouri State as he carried the ball 30 times for 212 yards and two touchdowns. His effort was part of the highest-scoring game in FCS history and helped the Racers to become the first FCS program to have a 500-yard passer, 200-yard receiver and a 200-yard rusher in the same game.
He would follow it up by breaking free on a 68-yard touchdown run early in the third quarter on his way to 159 yards and career-best three touchdowns in a victory over Eastern Illinois. Harris rushed for 198 of his career-best 242 yards in the first half of a victory over Tennessee Tech. He did most of his damage in the final minute of the half as he broke free on a career-long 94-yard run.
The Sports Network's Assessment of Harris:
Mike Harris, Murray State, Sr., 5-11, 200 - A late-season ankle injury prevented Harris from eclipsing 1,000 yards last season, but he averaged 100.4 yards over nine games. The former junior college transfer has a quick first step and breakaway speed, as evidenced by his 94-yard touchdown run in a 242- yard performance against Tennessee Tech last season. He averaged 6.5 yards per rush. In the Racers' spread attack, opponents have to be ready for Harris as a pass catcher as well.
