Murray State senior Cameron Carrico had a rough first round with an 81 at the NCAA Men's Golf Regional at Wolf Run Golf Club in Zionsville, Ind.
Carrico, the Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Year, got off to a rough start with a triple bogey at the par-4 fifth hole. He birdied the par-4 ninth to turn at 41. He also birdied both par-5 holes on the back, the 10th and 17th, but double bogeys in between at 14 and 15 was more than could be overcome.
“I feel bad for Cameron, he's disappointed in the way he played,” MSU Head Coach Eddie Hunt said. “He's a great player and he just had a bad day. I know he's determined to show he can play better and I think he will.”
The course at Wolf Run is playing to a par of 71 and 7,025 yards.
Carrico is playing the NCAA regional as an individual and was in 69th place in the field of 75 competitors.
Other individual scores included: Eric Steger of Ball State (73, 27th place), Nathan Sutherland, Miami OH (75, 41st), Johan Eriksson, Eastern Kentucky (77, 52nd) and Michael Powell, IUPUI (82, 70th).
There was a six-way tie at the top. Jack Belote (Memphis), Chris Brant (Iowa), Bud Cauley and Hunter Hamrick (Alabama), Scott Langley (Illinois) and Jack Schultz (Michigan) all shared the lead with a 3-under-par 68.
Illinois was the leader of the 54-hole event at 277, with Alabama (278), Michigan (278), Stanford (284) and Iowa (285) rounding out the top-5. Tennessee (287), Florida State (291), Memphis (292), Indiana (293) and Charlotte (295) made up the top-10. Wichita State (301), Wake Forest (301), UMKC (312) and Sacred Heart (319) rounded out the field.
Round two will be played Friday, with the final round set for Saturday.
Carrico will tee off in round two at 9:50 a.m.
