Murray State senior Cameron Carrico came home as the best finisher among individuals not playing on a team at the NCAA Men's Golf Regional at Wolf Run Golf Club in Zionsville, Ind., when turned in a final round 72 Saturday.
Carrico finished 34th in the field of all 75 competitors with scores of 81-69-72=244.
His appearance in the NCAA Tournament brought to an end an excellent career at Murray State.
“Murray State means a lot to me and I've enjoyed my time playing for the Racers,” the senior from Owensboro said. “I had the kind of senior season I was shooting for and that is satisfying.”
Indeed, Carrico finished his MSU career as a four-time All-Ohio Valley Conference selection and had bookend awards at the start and finish when he was OVC Freshman of the Year in 2008 and OVC Player of the Year in 2011.
“Cameron has been a joy to coach and I'm proud of the career he had as a Racer,” MSU Head Coach Eddie Hunt said. “Now he'll continue his career as a professional at some point and I'm looking forward to seeing what he can do.”
Carrico finished his MSU career with a sold round at the Wolf Run course that was playing to a par of 71 and 7,025 yards. He played the back nine first and birdied the 10th hole and added another at the seventh.
After Carrico, the other scores of those players not involved with a team included: Eric Steger of Ball State (73-76, 78=227, 49th place), Johan Eriksson, Eastern Kentucky (77-76, 75=228, 53rd) Nathan Sutherland, Miami OH (75-78-77=230, 61st), and Michael Powell, IUPUI (82-71-82=235, 65th).
Luke Guthrie of Illinois and Michigan's Lion Kim ended tied for medalist honors. Guthrie had scores of 69-71-65=205, while Kim carded scores of 71-68-65=205
The top five teams advanced to the NCAA finals led by Michigan at 841. Other teams advancing were Illinois (843), Alabama (847), Tennessee and Iowa (865). Stanford (869), Charlotte (875), Indiana (882), Wake Forest (882), Florida State (882), Memphis (883), Wichita State (906), UMKC (907) and Sacred Heart (950) made up the rest of the field.
The finals will be conducted May 31-June 5, at Karsten Creek in Stillwater, Okla. Oklahoma State is the host institution for this year's championships.
