USGA Public Links Championship
Murray State golfer Alli Weaver carded an even-par 73 at the United States Golf Association Public Links Qualifier at Center City Golf Club in Norristown, Pa., thus punching her ticket to the finals (June 27-July 2) at Bandon Dunes Golf Resport in Bandon, Ore.
Weaver, from Lititz, Pa., just completed her sophomore season with the Racers and turned in one of her best rounds of 2011. Part of her success was making birdie on all four par-5 holes at Center City.
“I hit the ball well and only missed one fairway which always helps,” Weaver said. “I played well and didn't have much to worry about as far as bad shots and trying to recover from them.”
Weaver finished her first season with Murray State with a flurry, after playing her freshman season at Akron. She scored six-straight rounds in the 70's over the last two events, including two top-10 finishes at the EKU Lady Colonel Classic (April 10) and Ohio Valley Conference Championship (April 23). Her scoring average in the last two events was 75.6.
This was Weaver's first try at qualifying for a USGA championship and her success follows along the lines of the spring she had for Murray State Head Coach Velvet Milkman.
“Toward the end of the season, she gained a lot of confidence and that made her excited about her summer,” Milkman said. “Alli is very competitive and willing to accept change to get better. She made some changes in her short game and that has made a big difference.”
Weaver, who qualified for one of three spots from this site, is also advancing to the USGA Public Links finals with friend, Aurora Kan also shot 73 and is headed to play at Purdue in the fall.
“The cool thing about this is I'm going with a friend,” Weaver said. “When you play with someone for as many years as we have coming up through junior golf, to get to go to a national championship with them is neat.”
Weaver will continue to set her goals high when she attempts to qualify for the USGA United States Amateur (July 18) at a qualifier at York Country Club in York, Pa. Another good score there will send her to the finals at Rhode Island Country Club (Aug. 8-14) in Barrington, R.I.
“I'm trying to play in some bigger events this summer,” Weaver added. “I've played in a lot of local tournaments in the past, but this summer I'm shooting a little higher to see what I can do.”
The USGC Public Links Championship will feature 36 holes of stroke play, which trims the field of 312 players down to 64. Match play will be used from there to determine the champion. The event will be played at the Bandon Trails and Old Macdonald layouts.
