United States Amateur
For the first time in the 18-year history of women's golf at Murray State, the program has a player headed to the United States Golf Association biggest amateur event.
Delaney Howson (Newmarket, Ontario) who will be a sophomore in the fall for the Racers, qualified for the United States Amateur when she carded a 75 (July 11) at Knollwood Country Club in West Bloomfield, Mich.
Howson is coming off a great spring season that saw her earn Ohio Valley Conference Freshman of the Year honors.
Two other MSU players attempted qualifying, but fell short.
Morgan Cross (Elizabethtown, Ky.) who will be a senior for MSU and was named All-OVC Second Team last spring, missed qualifying at Walnut Grove Golf Course in Dayton, Ohio when she shot an 83. Alli Weaver (Lititz, Pa.) who is a junior in the fall, played her qualifying round at York CC in York, Pa. and missed after she carded a 78.
This also marks the first time in MSU women's golf history that three student-athletes have attempted to qualify for the US Amateur in the same season.
“I'm very proud of Delaney, Morgan and Alli for attempting to qualify,” MSU Head Coach Velvet Milkman said. “The fact that they're trying to get into the biggest amateur events shows how much they expect from their game. I'm happy for Delaney to advance, she played well to get there.”
Howson plays the US Amateur at Rhode Island Country Club (Aug. 8-14) in Barrington, R.I. There will be two days of stroke play which trims the field down to 64 competitors. From that point, match play will be used to determine a champion.
Howson's appearance in the US Amateur comes on the heels of another first for Murray State Golf. Just last month, Alli Weaver qualified and played in the USGA's Public Links Championship in Bandon, Ore.
