Racers Take 12-Shot Lead Into Drake Creek Final Round

The Murray State women's golf team showed some great play in their first chance to perform in the 2011-12 season opener at the Drake Creek Invitational in Ledbetter, Ky.

The Racers enter Tuesday's final round with a 12-shot lead after they posted scores of 295-290=585 to lead defending champion Morehead State who had scores of 302-295=597.

With two hot rounds, the Racers had four players in the top-5 of the field of 63 competitors.

Alex Lennartsson was the 36-hole leader and teammate Morgan Cross was one shot behind as both tied their lowest round of their MSU careers with a 2-under-par 70. They each made six birdies to lead the field. Lennartsson recorded scores of 73-70=143, while Cross had scores of 74-70=144.

MSU's excellent play continued with Alli Weaver, who had a spot in fourth place with rounds of 74-74-148, while Delaney Howson was in fifth place after scores of 74-76=150. Claudia Schwan was in 38^th place with scores of 82-81=163.

“I was very pleased with the way we played today,” MSU Head Coach Velvet Milkman said. “Our team was focused and they took the day one shot at a time. It was good to see them get the season off to a solid start.”

Eastern Kentucky had third place at 609, while Belmont (617), Austin Peay (629), Western Kentucky (631) and Tennessee Tech (645) made up the top-7 teams. Lipscomb (648), Northern Kentucky (670) and Tennessee State (692) made up the rest of the field.

MSU has three players in the tournament as individuals including, Sophie Olley who was in 12^th place with rounds of 75-77=152. Gina Nuzzo had a spot in 57^th place with scores of 93-85=178, while Madolyn Parker was in 62^nd place with scores of 96-97=193.

The Drake Creek course is playing to a par of 72 and 6,178 yards.

The final round will be a shotgun start Tuesday morning beginning at 8:30 a.m.
