Mother Nature proved to be the toughest opponent the MSU Invitational field faced Monday at Miller Memorial GC in Murray, Ky.
The Racers' men's team was looking to get started in their quest for a ninth straight title, but heavy rain delayed the start of the 54-hole championship to the afternoon. When play was finally started at 2:20 p.m., the field of 74 competitors took to the Miller course, but darkness prevented anyone from finishing 18 holes.
“There was a lot of rain that fell today on the course and really, we were lucky to play as much as we did,” MSU Head Coach Eddie Hunt said. “The Miller Memorial staff did an excellent job of getting the course ready so that we could get out there.”
The field of 11 schools will come back Tuesday morning for an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start where they'll finish the first round. A decision to finish the event in 36 holes or 54 holes will be made before play begins.
Murray State is joined in the event by OVC members: Belmont, UT Martin and Morehead State and the rest of the field that includes: Bethel (TN), Brescia, Christian Brothers, John A. Logan, Kentucky Wesleyan, Lipscomb and Union (TN).
The Racers have won all eight previous championships since the event started in 2004.
Miller Memorial is playing to a par of 71 and 6,601 yards.
