The Murray State softball team wrapped up its fall season last week by sweeping a doubleheader with Shawnee State CC, 8-0 and 18-0 in five innings, at home on Tuesday and splitting a pair of games at the Western Kentucky Topper Fall Classic II on Sunday in Bowling Green. The Racers took down Volunteer State CC, 11-2 in five innings, to open the day, before falling to the host Hilltoppers in the final game, 8-3.
In the doubleheader against Shawnee on Tuesday, the Racers got the opportunity to flex both their offensive and defensive muscles. In the two games combined, the Racers scored 26 runs off of 31 hits, while allowing no runs off of three hits. In the first game, senior Shelby Kosmecki gave up just two hits with one walk and struck out 10, while freshman J.J. Francis tossed a five-inning complete game one-hitter in the back end of the doubleheader, in which she allowed just one walk.
Sophomore Alexa Becker tallied one homerun in each game, while sophomore Casey Castile notched two in the second game. Senior Stephanie Edwards also got in on the long ball party with one of her own in game two.
On Sunday, the Racers fell behind early in the first game against Vol State and trailed 2-0 after one inning. However, the Racers added one run in each of the next two innings, before blowing the game wide open in the fourth and fifth with four and five runs, respectively.
Senior Ellyn Troup helped lead the way in the game by going 2-for-4 with a double and four RBIs. Sophomore Mo Ramsey also went 2-for-4 in the game with a double of her own and two runs
Kosmecki picked up her second win of the fall in the contest by allowing just two runs off of five hits with four strikeouts over four innings of work.
In the final game against Western Kentucky, the Racers got on the board early when Castile hit her fourth dinger of the fall to put MSU on top, 3-0. Unfortunately for Murray State, that would be its only offensive production in the contest as the Hilltoppers scored one in the second, one in the third, three in the fifth and three in the sixth to take the game, 8-3
Sophomore Cheyanne Gaskey (1-1) took the loss for the Racers by giving up four earned runs off of nine hits with one walk and one strikeout through five innings of work. Francis threw the final two innings of the game and allowed three runs off of two hits with two walks and a strikeout.
Becker finished the fall with the best batting average among starters by turning in a .500 clip with three doubles, three home runs, 12 RBIs, two stolen bases, five walks, an on-base percentage of .586 and a slugging percentage of 1.000.
Ramsey also had a great fall for the Racers finishing at .481 by going 13-for-27 with two doubles and two RBIs from the leadoff spot. Castile led the team in long balls over the eight game stretch with four, while also hitting .333 and slugging .917,
As a team, the Racers ended their non-championship segment hitting .343 and slugging .551 to go along with an on-base percentage of .414.
The MSU pitching staff ended the fall with a 2.66 ERA, while limiting opponents to a 2.38 batting average. Kosmecki led the way in strikeouts with 21, while Francis had the lowest individual opponent's batting average at .180.
The Racers will kick-off their 2013 campaign on Feb. 15-17 at Mississippi State's Bulldog Battle in Starkville.
