The Murray State softball split a pair of games at the Louisville Fall Tournament on Sunday to improve their fall season record to 3-1. The Racers opened play on Sunday with a 7-1 loss to host Louisville, but battled back to top Bellarmine in the second game, 5-4.
The Cardinals scored one run in each of the first innings, but the Racers cut the lead in half in the top of the third with an RBI-single from sophomore Alexa Becker (Breese, Ill.) that scored sophomore Mo Ramsey (Pickneyville, Ill.).
However in the fourth inning, Louisville was able to put the game away with a five-run inning that included a three-run blast from sophomore Whitney Arion (Delphi, Ind.). The Cardinals went on to add two more runs in the frame to cap the scoring at 7-1.
Becker finished the game for the Racers by going 2-for-2 with a double, a RBI and a walk. In the circle for MSU, senior Shelby Kosmecki (Somerset, Ky.) took the loss after allowing six earned runs off of seven hits with four walks and two strikeouts over 3.1 innings.
In the second game, the Racers struck first with a solo home run from junior Meghan Sims (Owensboro, Ky.) that sailed over the left field wall. However, in the bottom of the inning Bellarmine took a 3-1 lead thanks to a pair of RBI-doubles and a Murray State error.
The Racers then used a RBI-single from junior Leslie Bridges (Murphysboro, Ill.) in the fourth and a two RBI-single from Becker in the fifth to surge back into the lead at 4-3. In the bottom of the sixth, the Knights tied up the game with a two-out solo home run from sophomore Scarlett Powers (Brandenburg, Ky.).
However, in the seventh inning the Racers went back on top for good, thanks to a RBI-single from senior Stephanie Edwards (Bowling Green, Ky.) that scored freshman Brianne Sanders (Cape Girardeau, Mo.) for the would-be win.
Becker once again led Murray State by going 3-for-4 with two RBIs. She finished the doubleheader by going 5-for-6 and is now hitting an astronomical .727 through four fall games.
Freshman J.J. Francis (Louisville, Ky.) picked up her second win of the fall by allowing just one run off of three hits with two strikeouts over the final three innings of play.
The Racers will resume fall play on Oct. 14, when they host Shawnee Community College at Racer Field for a double-header. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
