The Murray State women's basketball team hits the road for its first away game of the season when they travel to Harrisonburg, Va., on Thursday to meet 2012 WNIT runner-up, James Madison
The Racer's are coming off of a heartbreaking loss to Indiana in which the Hoosiers scored the winning basket with just five second left to escape Murray with a 63-62 win.
Down 50-41with seven and half minutes to play, the Racers rallied to outscore the Hoosiers down the stretch, 21-11… With just 14 seconds left in the game, senior Mariah Robinson hit a three that gave the Racers their first lead in the contest since they led 14-12 in the first half.
However, Indiana was able to drive the length of the floor in just 11 seconds to take back the lead with the Chaplin jumper from Linda Rubene. After a timeout, the Racers (0-2) had a chance for one final play, but Robinson's 3-pointer from about 35-feet, hit the rim and bounced out to end the game.
Robinson led MSU in the game in both major statistical categories with 19 points and nine rebounds, while junior Erica Burgess and sophomore Keiona Kirby followed with nine.
The Dukes will enter Thursday after an 0-2 start to their season. JMU lost its season opener, 78-57, at Virginia on Friday, followed by a 65-60 loss to Quinnipiac on Sunday in its home opener. Junior Kirby Burkholder has led the Dukes through the first two games with an average of 24.5 points. Burkholder led all scorers with 25 points on Friday, and she followed it up with a 24 point, 15 rebound double-double performance on Sunday.
JMU is coming off of a stellar 2011-12 season in which they went 29-8 and finished as the WNIT runner-up. Senior Tarik Hislop returns to the line-up after leading the Dukes with 14.8 points per game, while senior Nikki Newman also returns after leading her team in rebounds with 7.9.
Thursday will mark the third meeting all-time between the two teams and the first to take place during the 21st Century. The two previous meeting came on March 8, 1975 and Nov. 23, 1999, both wins for the Dukes. The Racers are 0-1 all-time at the Convocation Center falling in its only other trip there, 68-59, in 1999.
Fans not able to make the trip to the other Commonwealth will have three ways to follow the action live. For fans in the greater Murray area, they can catch the action on the radio with Kyle Rogers on 1340 AM WNBS.
James Madison is offering free audio and video streams through the MadiZONE portion of JMUSports.com. JMUSports.com will also carry live stats that will be free to all fans.
