After setting an FCS record with a 100-yard punt return for touchdown against Southeast Missouri, Murray State junior wide receiver/return specialist Walter Powell was selected as the National Special Teams Player of the Week by The Sports Network, the National Punt Returner of the Week by the College Football Performance Awards and a College Sporting News All-Star.
Also, junior Duane Brady was selected as the National Kickoff Returner of the Week by the CFPA, and punter Steven Mix was selected to the CFPA Honor Roll.
Powell (St. Louis, Mo.) nearly returned a punt and a kickoff for a touchdown in the game, but instead settled for 251 return yards on just five touches. He had 117 yards on two punt returns, while accumulating 134 yards on three kickoff returns.
After the Racers fell behind 3-0, Powell took the ensuing kickoff 83 yards to set up the offense at the SEMO 15-yard line. Later in the first quarter, Powell returned his first punt for 17 yards.
Just over five minutes into the second quarter and the Racers still leading 7-3, Powell was backed two-yards into his own endzone by a 53-yard punt. He did not hesitate and went up the middle before breaking down the right sideline for the 100-yard return. He became the second Racer to return a punt 100 yards, joining Phil Foster's 1950 return against Morehead State.
Powell opened the second half by setting the Racer offense up near midfield with a 36-yard return.
Brady (St. Augustine, Fla.) returned just one kickoff this season, but he made the most of that one return. With the score tied 35-35 and 3:07 showing on the clock, Brady took the short kick and shot through a gap in the center of the field on his way to an 85-yard touchdown and the victory. Last season, Brady returned a kickoff 98 yards for a touchdown against UT Martin.
Mix (Barlow, Ky.) only punted twice against SEMO, but averaged 46.0 yards per punt. Both of his punts were downed inside the 20-yard line, including his 60-yard boot in the first quarter that was downed on the four yard line.
