Baseball Signs Trio of Pitchers

Murray State head coach Rob McDonald has announced the signing of right-handed pitchers Tanner Edge and John Lollar, and left-handed pitcher BT Wichman. All three pitchers signed their National Letter's of Intent last week and will join the Breds in the fall of 2013.
Edge will come to MSU after closing out his career at Apollo High School. As a junior, Edge started 11 games and posted a 7-4 record with a 2.67 ERA. He struck out 60 and walked 15 in 63 innings. He also hit .312 with six doubles and 24 RBIs. He is rated as the 29th-best prospect in Kentucky by Prep Baseball Report.
“Tanner is a guy we have known about for awhile, coming from a great program at Apollo High School,” said McDonald. “Under the guidance of Bob and Ryne Mantooth, he has developed into a nice pitching prospect. He has mid to upper 80's arm strength and a great frame, however, his best pitch is an outstanding breaking pitch. He has worked hard over the last year to get where he is at, and we look forward to seeing him compete in a Breds uniform.”
Lollar joins the Breds after closing out a standout career at Murray High School. He earned first-team all-region and honorable mention all-state honors as a junior after going 8-1 with a 1.58 ERA. He allowed just 35 hits and struck out 99 in 70.2 innings. He is rated as the 17th-best prospect in Kentucky by Prep Baseball Report.
In his second start of the season, Lollar struck out a season-high 15 in throwing a complete-game one-hit shutout. He followed that up by
fanning 11 in a seven-inning no-hitter against Trigg County. Lollar struck out 13 over eight innings against Community Christian Academy, before earning his final victory of the season with a two-hit, 11 strikeout effort against Crittenden County.
“John is a young man I have watched grow up and develop into a dominant high school pitcher,” said McDonald. “He is a rare high school power arm that has shown the ability to pound the strike zone. He has very good deception and shows a swing and miss slider. We plan that he will be ready and equipped to compete at a high level for us when he arrives.”
Wichman is a standout baseball and football player for Columbus East High School in Columbus, Ind. He has been selected to play in the 2013 Under Armour All-America Preseason Tournament held in Tucson, Ariz. on Jan. 18-20, 2013. He is rated as the 31st-best prospect in Indiana by Prep Baseball Report.
As a junior, Wichman earned all-conference and all-area honors after striking out 50 over 36.1 innings. As an outfielder he led the team with a .316 average and 11 stolen bases.
Wichman earned honorable mention all-conference honors his sophomore season after leading the team in innings pitched (45.2), complete games (3) and strikeouts (64).
“BT is a lefty that has outstanding stuff,” said McDonald. “He has mid-to-upper 80's arm strength to go along with his breaking pitches, making him the kind of left-hand pitcher every college program is trying to find. He was also recruited in football, a testament to his excellent speed and athleticism. He will be a great pitcher for us here at MSU.”
The Breds open the 2013 season on Feb. 15 as they travel to face Central Arkansas in a three-game series. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
