Racer Golf Signs T.J. Ferry & Matthew Zakutney

Murray State men's golf coach Eddie Hunt announced the signing of two student-athletes who will join the Racers in the fall of 2013 as freshmen.
T.J. Ferry hails from Christian County High School in Hopkinsville, Ky., while Matthew Zakutney joins MSU from Saint Mary High School in Paducah, Ky.
“I'm excited that T.J. and Matthew have decided to become part of the MSU Golf family,” Hunt said. “Both have a tremendous amount of talent and they'll both have great careers in our golf program. With this class joining our freshman class from 2012 we'll be able to stay strong when seniors Patrick Newcomb, Hunter York and Tyler Brown graduate.”

T.J. Ferry - Hopkinsville, Ky. - Christian County High School T.J. Ferry comes to MSU after being a seven-year member of the Colonels' program at Christian County High School. Ferry won four events in the fall of 2012 for Christian County with scores that included 69 at Hopkins Central and a 71 at Daviess County. In 2012, Ferry played in three events on the American Junior Golf Association circuit with a best finish of 21st place at the AJGA Junior at Quad Cities in East Moline, Ill., with scores of 78-77-78=233. In the summer of 2012, Ferry fired rounds 62-73=135 to win the Hopkinsville Country Club championship. He had a fifth place showing at the Kentucky Junior Amateur with scores of 71-76=147 in Fort Knox, Ky. “T.J. had great summer in what he did in the AJGA and the other accomplishments he had,” Hunt said. “I think he was the best player in Region-II (of Kentucky). Matthew Zakutney - Paducah, Ky. - St. Mary High School Zakutney won the Kentucky High School Athletics Association Region-I title last fall with a round of 70 in Paducah, Ky. He helped lead SMHS to a third place finish at the KHSAA State Tournament where he had scores of 78-77=154 and placed 21st individually. He also placed in the top-10 of the Kentucky All-A State Tournament after winning the Region-I title with a 72. Last summer he had a second place showing at the Rolling Hills Invitational in Paducah with scores of 69-71=140 and placed third in the GolfWeek Junior Tour event Lexington, Ky., with scores of 75-68-71=214. Zakutney also placed 13th at the Irvin Cobb Championship in Paducah, Ky., with scores of 74-71=145. As a junior in 2011, Zakutney placed second at the KHSAA State Tournament with scores of 78-75=153 in leading the Vikings to a runner-up finish. “We recruit what we feel are the best players from our region and Matthew was that type of player,” Hunt said. “He comes from a strong Saint Mary program that competed at a high level. Matthew will have the chance to make an impact in our program.” |
