2013 Murray State Softball Schedule
Six teams that played in last year's NCAA tournament, including 2012 Women's College World Series participant Tennessee, highlight the 2013 Murray State softball schedule, announced by head coach Kara Amundson on Tuesday.
The Racers will face three SEC opponents in Tennessee, Arkansas and Mississippi State this season, as well as South Alabama, UAB and UT Martin, all of which qualified for the 64-team field in 2012. In addition to the tournament teams, Murray State's 2013 schedule includes 12 teams that finished .500 or better, 10 that won 30 or more game, three that won 40 or more and one, Tennessee, which won 50-plus games.
“We are really excited about the schedule we have put together for this spring season,” said head coach Kara Amundson. “We start off our season with some competitive tournaments hosted by schools in the SEC, SoCon, and MVC. We are looking forward to solid competition early on and will be looking for those games to prepare us for OVC play.”
Murray State will kick-off its first campaign under Amundson on Feb.15-17 with the Bulldog Battle in Starkville, Miss., hosted by Mississippi State. The season will officially get underway on Feb.15 when the Racers open play in the tournament against regional rival Western Kentucky. The trip to Mississippi will mark the first of four early season tournaments for the Racers that include trips to Arkansas, Samford and Evansville.
On March 16, MSU will play its first-ever game at its new on-campus home, Racer Field, when it opens OVC play with a three-game set against Southeast Missouri. The expanded OVC and new divisions also brings a new scheduling format to softball in which teams play a 3-game set with every team in their division and a doubleheader with all six teams from the opposite division.
For spring break, the Racers will head towards the mountains of Tennessee where they will play games at Tennessee, Chattanooga and East Tennessee State. MSU will wrap-up its spring break trip that weekend with OVC games at Tennessee Tech and Jacksonville State.
In total, the Racers will have nine home dates that include conference sets with Austin Peay, Morehead State, Tennessee State, and Eastern Kentucky. Outside of the OVC, Murray State will have home non-conference tilts with Memphis, Bethel (Tenn.) and St. Catharine.
Other highlights include a date with Arkansas on Feb. 23 as part of the Arkansas Invitational and three games with South Alabama and UAB as part of Samford's Magic City Classic on March 3-5. On April 13, the Racers will travel to defending OVC champion UT Martin for a crucial three-game set between East Division contenders.
The Racers will close out the 2013 regular season at home with OVC East rival Austin Peay on May 4-5. On May 5, the Racers will pay tribute to the graduating members of the team with Senior Day activities.
Amundson and her squad will be looking to improve on last season's 34-21 overall record and 19-11 mark in league play. The Racers finished fourth in the OVC during the regular season and came up just one game short of advancing to their first-ever OVC Championship game in the OVC tournament.
Helping lead the way for Murray State this season will be outfielder Casey Castile, pitcher Shelby Kosmecki and outfielder Mo Ramsey. Castile had quite a freshman campaign that ended with her being named as the 2012 OVC Freshman of the Year, as well as a first-team All-OVC and an OVC All-Newcomer selection. Kosmecki and Ramsey also received post-season honors last season, with Kosmecki being named second to the All-OVC second-team and Ramsey being named to the All-Newcomer team.
