Murray State's Isaiah Canaan was named the men's basketball Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Week in voting conducted by the league's sports information directors.
Canaan helped the Racers to two wins last week as MSU wrapped up a 28-1 regular season and a 15-1 record in league play for their third straight outright OVC championship.
On Thursday, Canaan scored 24 points in MSU's 80-62 win at Tennessee State when he was 8-of-12 from the field and 5-of-7 from three point range. He came back Saturday at Tennessee Tech with 18 points in MSU's 69-64 win.
For the week, Canaan scored 21.0 points per game and shot 52 percent from the field on 13-of-25 shots and 53 percent from the three point line on 8-of-15 shots. He also averaged four assists per game.
This week's award marks the sixth time this season that Canaan has won the player of the week honor.
Canaan, a junior from Biloxi, Miss., is having an MVP season scoring 19.4 points per game, which puts him 22nd in the NCAA. His made three-point basket average of 3.2 puts him 7th in the nation. He needs 11 threes to match the MSU single season record of 103 by De'Teri Mayes in the 1997-98 season.
Canaan is also being considered for the Bob Cousy Award, Oscar Robertson Award and the Lou Henson Award, as well as several All-America honors.
With the regular season finished, the Racers head into this week's OVC Tournament as the No. 1 seed. The Racers play in a semifinal game Friday at 6 p.m. at Nashville's Municipal Auditorium in a game aired on ESPNU. The Racers' opponent will be decided on games that will be played Wednesday and Thursday. No. 5 seed Southeast Missouri plays No. 8 seed Eastern Kentucky at 6 p.m. Wednesday and the winner meets No. 4 seed Tennessee Tech Thursday at 6 p.m., with the winner advancing to meet the Racers.
