Racers Take Fifth at SIU Invitational

The Murray State women's track & field team placed fifth (47 points) out of 10 teams at the SIU Invitational in Carbondale, Ill.

The Racers saw 15 personal-best marks from the 15 participants at the meet. MSU earned 12 top-10 finishes during the two-day meet.

“The meet went really well this weekend,” said head coach Jenny Severns. “Everyone worked really hard last week and was a little tired, but they stepped up to the challenge. We had a ton of season bests from those that competed and a few pleasant surprises. I am really happy with where we are right now.”

Freshman Ashley Conway was the first to earn a top-5 finish, coming in second in the high jump. The McHenry, Ill., native had a clear of 1.65m (5'5”). Sophomore Katie Forshey placed third in the same event, with a clear of 1.65m (5'5”) as well.

Sophomore Sharda Bettis earned three top-10 finishes in the 60 (7^th), long jump (6^th) and the 60 hurdles (2^nd). Bettis first took sixth in the long jump, with a jump of 5.43m (17'9.75”) on Friday, Feb. 3. She then earned second place in the 60 hurdles, with a personal-best time of 8.81. The Dallas, Texas, native also set career-best times of 7.90 in the 60 (7^th) and 26.47 in the 200 (11^th).

MSU has one more meet on the schedule before the 2011-12 Ohio Valley Conference Indoor Championships, Feb. 24-25. The Racers will prepare for the OVC championships at the Hoosier Hills Invite, Feb. 10-11 in Bloomington, Ind.
