MSU Women's Golf Starts Spring Season With Home Event

Miller Memorial Golf Course
The Murray State women's golf team is set to open the spring portion of their 2011-12 season when they host the MSU NewWave Communications Classic at their home course, Miller Memorial GC in Murray, Ky., on Sunday.
The Racers, trying for their fifth straight title in their home event, will host a field of seven visiting teams including: Tennessee State and Eastern Kentucky of the Ohio Valley Conference. Other teams competing are: Drury, Jackson State, Lipscomb, Marshall and Southern Illinois.
The tournament will be contested with 18 holes of stroke play on Sunday and Monday. All teams will start at the first tee Sunday beginning with at 9 a.m. The schedule for Monday calls for a 9 a.m. shotgun start.
MSU has won six of the nine events since the tournament was started in 2003. MSU has won the last four dating back to 2008. MSU also won the inaugural event in 2003 and again in 2005. The other champions in the event were: Kentucky (2004), Cincinnati (2006) and Central Arkansas (2007).
Bad weather limited the event to 18 holes last year as MSU's Morgan Cross won the individual title with a 76.
MSU's other winners of the event have been Joyce Trus in 2009. Other MSU medalists include: Megan McKinney (2008), Nikki Orazine (2005), Cuyler Hedley (2004) and Lee Anne Pace (2003). Pace holds the 36-hole tournament record individual score at 147.
The Miller Memorial course will play to a par-72 and 6,017 yards. There is no admission fee and spectators are invited to come out and watch.
