The Murray State men's golf team had a spot in 11th place in a field of 18 teams after the first round of the Samford Intercollegiate being played at Hoover Country Club in Hoover, Ala.
The Racers carded a first round 312 and trailed ninth place Eastern Kentucky (310) and eighth place Winthrop (308). MSU led 12th place Western Carolina (313) and 13th place SIUE (314).
Patrick Newcomb and Hunter York led MSU as they shared 18th place in the field of 93 with a score of 76. Tyler Brown was in 51st place after a 79 and Joe Scholl was in 72nd place with an 81. Wade Thompson had a spot in 77th place after an 82.
Host Samford had the lead after a first round 291, while Austin Peay (297), Belmont (298), Davidson (298) and San Houston State (299) made up the top-5. Houston Baptist was in sixth place at 303, while Southern Illinois (305) was in seventh place.
The second round was halted Monday evening because of darkness. The teams will finish the second round and the third and final round Tuesday.
The course at Hoover CC is playing to 7,001 yards and to a par of 72.
