Kosmecki Blanks Eastern Illinois in 3-0 Victory

Murray State softball picked up the victory in the series finale against Eastern Illinois, using a great pitching performance from starter Shelby Kosmecki along with solid defense behind her to post a 3-0 win at Williams Field in Charleston, Ill.
Kosmecki (6-5) dominated in the complete game shutout, allowing just a pair of hits while walking none and striking out five. EIU recorded hits in just the second and fourth innings and never advanced a runner past second base as Carly Willert was thrown out 9-6-5 trying to stretch her double into a triple with one out in the bottom of the fourth.
The Racers (12-11, 7-5 OVC) scored their first run of the day in the top of the fourth, aided by a pair of Eastern Illinois errors. Casey Castile reached first on a fielding error by the EIU second baseman to lead off the inning. After stealing second for her eighth stolen base of the season, she ended up scoring on a Leslie Bridges groundout to short. Advancing to third on the throw to first, the throw attempt back across the diamond to third was wild, allowing Castile to score on the play.
MSU added a pair of insurance runs in the fifth as Sarah Anderson led off the inning with a single into right field. Mandi Kellerman followed with a sacrifice bunt down the third base line that the EIU third baseman threw into center field on an attempt to get the force out at second. The throwing error allowed Anderson to score all the way from first as Kellerman ended up on second. She would move to third on a bunt single by Mo Ramsey in the next at-bat, and pinch runner Alaina Zloty would score the second run of the inning on a fielder's choice from Christian Cox as the Panthers recorded the first out of the inning at second base.
Ramsey ended the game with three of the Racers four hits, improving her batting average 33 points on the day.
Kosmecki moved her earned run average back below two on the season with her second complete game outing in three starts to feature no earned runs allowed. The junior now sports a 1.92 ERA in 69.1 innings pitched this season.
Murray State returns home this week, hosting SIU Edwardsville in a mid-week doubleheader Wednesday, April 4. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
