Defense Rules the Day

Murray State put on the full pads Tuesday afternoon as the Racers went through a two-hour workout that included a 50-play scrimmage. The scrimmage worked on long yardage, 3rd-and-5 and drives.
“We got a little scrimmage work in today,” said head coach Chris Hatcher. “I think our defense is coming along nicely. We are a lot better on front seven. Offensively we worked on our no back set a good bit today and we looked a little rough around the edges. All in all it was a good practice. This is going to be a long week for these guys, but we just have to push through and continue to fight through to the end of spring.”
The defense had the upper hand in the situational portion of the scrimmage as linebacker Qua Huzzie got things going with a sack. Fellow linebacker Chris Scurry broke through for a tackle in the back field on a screen pass. Safety Brandon Wicks had the biggest play for the defense as he met the running back in the hole, forced a fumble and then recovered it.
The offense began to move the ball as Casey Brockman found Ja-Vonta Trotter for 26 yards on the first play of down-and-distance. The duo connected two more times for 17 more yards, but the drive stalled.
The offense enjoyed its most success on its third drive as they put together a 10-play drive, but were not able to score. The drive started with Brockman completing four-straight passes, with the final two going to Dontel Watkins. Brockman later scrambled for a first down, put a pair of sacks and a dropped pass ended the drive.
The Racers will be in the weight room on Wednesday before returning to the practice field Thursday at 3:30 p.m.
