The Murray State Racers compete in the 2012 Ohio Valley Conference women's golf championships starting Sunday at Greystone Golf Club in Dickson, Tenn. The 54-hole event runs through Tuesday.
The Racers are looking to get back on top after Morehead State stopped their string of three straight titles in 2011. MSU has won eight titles, the most in the league and all have come under the only coach Racer women's golf has ever had, Velvet Milkman.
“Greystone is a course where you have to get your ball in the fairway,” Milkman said. “You have to think your way around it. You can't just bang driver off every tee and that sets up well for us. We talk a lot about course management and this time of year they start to think about it more.”
In 2011, the Racers fell short of a fourth straight title with three OVC rookies in the lineup. Delaney Howson, Alexandra Lennartsson and Alli Weaver were playing in their first league tournament and seeing Greystone for the first time.
“Experience counts for so much in golf, no matter what level you're playing,” Milkman said. “Those three will have the experience of last year to help them. I think we're peaking right now as a team. I really feel like we have the talent to come back with a championship.”
The Racers enter the OVC showdown with three of the top-5 players in overall scoring. Delaney Howson is second at 75.5, while Alexandra Lennartsson is fourth at 76.3. MSU senior Morgan Cross is fifth at 76.4. Alli Weaver is 11th at 78.2.
Defending champ Morehead State leads the OVC with a team scoring average of 306.0, but the Racers are just a fraction behind at 306.1, while Jacksonville State is third at 307.3. Since the OVC began playing a women's golf championship in 1994, Murray State has won eight titles, Jacksonville State four and Morehead State scored its first title last year. The last time a team other than those three won the championship was Tennessee Tech in 2001.
Saturday is practice day for the teams in the event, and all start the event knowing that a win here puts them into the NCAA Tournament.
When Sunday rolls around, the Racers will send freshman Gina Nuzzo out first as she plays in her first OVC Championship starting at 9:40 a.m., followed by Weaver at 9:50 a.m. Lennartsson has the 10 a.m. tee time, with Cross going at 10:10 a.m. and Howson anchors the starting five hitting her first shot at 10:20 a.m.
The OVC Championship will be held for a third straight season at the Greystone GC. The par-72 course will play about 6,000 yards.
Opened in 1998, Greystone was designed by PGA Tour pro Mark McCumber and has hosted numerous high profile events including PGA Tour qualifying, Senior PGA Tour qualifying and the Tennessee State Open.
