Murray State softball kicked off its final week of home games with a pair of 8-1 and 10-1 wins against Bethel University Tuesday afternoon at Racer Field.
Bethel would take an early 1-0 lead in the first as Sydney McMillin singled up the middle off of MSU pitcher CheyAnne Gaskey's glove and into center field with the bases loaded to score a run. Gaskey would escape the inning without giving up any additional runs, getting the second out at the plate on a comebacker to the circle and ending the inning on a groundout to third.
Murray State (24-16) would grab the run back in its half of the inning as Leslie Bridges grounded out to third with a pair of runners in scoring position, scoring Megan Glosser from third to tie the contest at 1-1.
The Racers scored three more in the bottom of the second, two runs coming in as Casey Castile hit a sacrifice fly to right field with the bases loaded, scoring Morgan Harrell from third. As the ball was returned to the infield, Glosser got caught in a rundown between first and second, allowing Christian Cox to score after having advanced to third earlier in the play. Glosser would score the third run of the inning on an Alexa Becker double to the wall in center.
Murray State added three more runs in the bottom of the third as a throwing error on a force out attempt at second allowed Mandi Kellerman to come in to score and let Sarah Anderson move to second. A pair of back-to-back doubles off of the outfield wall by Stephanie Edwards and Morgan Harrell drove in a run each to put MSU up 7-1 through three innings.
The eighth MSU run of the game scored as Castile singled slowly down the first baseline with one out, scoring Alaina Zloty from third.
Gaskey dominated in the circle for MSU, striking out a career-high nine while allowing just one unearned run on three hits and a walk.
Glosser and Harrell each recorded a pair of hits for the Racers with Castile driving in two and Glosser scoring twice.
Glosser scored the first run of game two in the bottom of the first on a sacrifice fly into right by Bridges. Ramsey scored another run as the Racers successfully executed a double steal, with Becker stealing second and Ramsey taking off for home as Bethel threw towards second. A Casey Castile single up the middle scored Becker, and Kellerman's fifth home run of the season to right field drove in a pair of runs to give MSU a 5-0 lead. Ramsey's second hit of the inning, a single into right field with the bases loaded, scored Mallory Richardson and Ellyn Troup to put the Racers up 7-0.
The Wildcats grabbed a run back in the top of the second on a solo home run to left field off the bat of Shelby Evans.
Kellerman and Richardson each doubled in runs in the bottom of the second to take a 9-1 lead.
Castile would hit her team-leading seventh home run of the season on the first pitch of the bottom of the fourth, increasing the MSU advantage to 10-1.
Shelby Kosmecki improved to 10-9 on the season, striking out seven. She gave up three hits and a walk in the five inning outing.
Ramsey, Castile and Kellerman each had three hits in the game for MSU, with Kellerman driving in three and Castile scoring three times.
The Racers are back in action Wednesday afternoon, hosting Samford in two games beginning at 3 p.m.
