Racers Tackle OVC Men's Golf Championship At Greystone

The Murray State Racers begin play at the 2012 Ohio Valley Conference men's golf championship Thursday in Dickson, Tenn., at Greystone Golf Club. The 54-hole event runs Thursday through Saturday (April 26-29) with the winner taking the OVC's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
The Racers enter the OVC challenge with a boost in confidence after winning their last time out at the TSU Big Blue Intercollegiate (April 17).
“Winning last week has certainly gone a long way in helping our mindset and that's always a good thing to go into the OVC Championship feeling good about your game,” MSU Head Coach Eddie Hunt said. “If we can keep our good play going, we'll be in the hunt for the title Saturday afternoon.”
The Racers have won the OVC title four times with the last coming at Greystone in 2010.
Coming into the 2012 event, the Racers are ranked fifth in the OVC with a 298.8 scoring average. Jacksonville State leads with a 292.9 average.
MSU has had an up and down season but only last week did they seem to solidify a starting five for the first time.
“It's been a strange season for us and we've had to try a lot of difference combinations as the season as progressed,” Hunt said. “But last week the five that we had in there performed at a high level and although it's taken us a while to get to this point, this is our best five going to the OVC this week.”
The Racers top player is junior Patrick Newcomb who is tied for the scoring lead in the OVC at 72.4 with David Lawrence of Eastern Illinois. Newcomb won the TSU event last week with a 7-under-par effort of 73-69-67=209 which marked his third win in the 2011-12 season and his sixth top-5 finish. Newcomb has stamped himself as one of the leading candidates to be named the OVC Golfer of the Year at the end of this week's event.
Former walk-on Hunter York, a junior, has played himself into one being one of the steadiest players in the OVC. His scoring average of 74.0 is 11th in the OVC. He has nine rounds of par of better this season. His third place finish at TSU was his best of the season.
Tyler Brown is 30th in the OVC with a 75.4 average. Last week he had two rounds under par and finished seventh, which was his best showing of the 2011-12 season.
MSU has senior William Hunt and junior Dustin Gosser back in the starting five. Hunt has a 77.3 scoring average, while Gosser is at 78.0. He finished 24th in last year's OVC Championship. Hunt is the wildcard for MSU, as he competes in his first OVC showdown.
MSU will be paired with Jacksonville State and UT Martin in the first round. Gosser has MSU's first tee time at 10:10 a.m., followed by William Hunt at 10:20 a.m., Tyler Brown 10:30 a.m., York at 10:40 a.m. and Newcomb at 10:50 a.m. Tennessee State, Eastern Illinois and Morehead State will start the event with the first tee time at 8:30 a.m. Eastern Kentucky, Austin Peay and Tennessee Tech will be paired together starting at 9:20 a.m.
Greystone GC just hosted the OVC Women's Championship final round on Tuesday will play 6,858 yards this week for the men's event with a par of 72. The course opened in 1998 and was designed by PGA Tour pro Mark McCumber.
Following Thursday's opening round, the annual awards banquet will be held at Greystone.
