The Murray State Racers fired an opening round 293 Thursday and had a spot in fifth place in a field of nine teams at the 2012 Ohio Valley Conference Men's Golf Championship at Greystone Golf Club in Dickson, Tenn.
MSU's 293 trailed first place Austin Peay by 13 shots as the Govs carded a 280 to lead second place Jacksonville State (286) by six strokes. UT Martin was in third place at 290, while Eastern Kentucky was in fourth with a 291.
Senior William Hunt, competing in his first OVC Championship, led MSU with an even-par 72 which was good for a spot in seventh place in the field of 45 players. Hunter York came home with a 1-over-par 73 for a spot in 13th, along with teammate Tyler Brown. York was cruising to an under-par finish until he was derailed by a triple bogey at the last hole. Brown made all pars until a bogey at the 16th hole.
MSU's Patrick Newcomb, one of the candidates for OVC Golfer of the Year who entered the event as the league scoring leader, carded a 3-over-par 75 and was in 26th place. He birdied the last two holes coming in. Dustin Gosser recorded a 76 and had a spot in 30th place.
"I was pleased with the way we came out today and competed,” MSU Head Coach Eddie Hunt said. “We showed with this lineup, we can get something from all five guys. Everybody played hard, but we just didn't finish the round well on the last three holes and that cost us.”
“You have to take your hat off to Austin Peay today,” Hunt said. “To come out and deal with the wind and shoot the score they did, that gave them some separation from the rest of the field. Our Patrick Newcomb is capable of coming out tomorrow and shooting a low score and if we keep playing, we can get back into this thing.”
After the Racers in fifth place at 293, the rest of the OVC field was rounded out by: Eastern Illinois (294), Morehead State (302), Tennessee State (305) and Tennessee Tech (305).
The early favorite for medalist falls to Anthony Bradley who fired a 6-under par 66 to lead JSU's Tom Robson who carded a 68. There were six rounds under par in the first day of competition.
The Greystone course is playing 6,858 yards and to a par of 72.
The evening of the first round will see the teams of the OVC come together for the annual men's golf awards dinner.
Friday sees the start of round two at 8:30 a.m. when TSU, TTU and Morehead are paired together. The Racers will play with EKU and EIU starting at 9:20 a.m. when Gosser hits the first Racer shot of the day. Newcomb starts at 9:30 a.m., while Brown goes at 9:40 a.m., York at 9:50 a.m. and Hunt at 10 a.m. The top three teams: APSU, JSU and UTM start their pairings at 10:10 a.m.
