The Murray State Racers climbed back into the quest for the 2012 Ohio Valley Conference Men's Golf Championship at Greystone Golf Club in Dickson, Tenn., but their 288 would've been better if not for having to navigate the tough finishing holes of 16 through 18.
Coming into the par-3 16th, the Racers had made an amazing move in round two after starting the day 13 shots behind leader Austin Peay. Not only did MSU erase the deficit, they took a two-shot lead during holes nine through 12. MSU stumbled coming in and played the final three holes 7-over-par. The par-5 17th and long par-4 18th proved to be a tough out for MSU.
The Racers have scores of 293-288=581 and climbed from fifth to third place. MSU trails leader Jacksonville State by 10 shots after the Gamecocks carded scores of 286-285=571. Austin Peay is in second place with scores of 280-295=575.
“I'm really pleased with the way we played today, we played exceptionally well, but we had some unfortunate things happen to us on 16 and 18,” MSU Head Coach Eddie Hunt. “It was an amazing day, we were 13 down starting the day and came back to take the lead after 15 holes. Our team has really come together and everyone is contributing.”
Senior William Hunt continues to have a great event in his first crack at the OVC Championship. He fired a 1-under-par 71 today and is in fourth place at 143. He had a 72 in round one. Patrick Newcomb rebounded from a first round 75 to post a 71 for a 146 total and a spot in 14th place with teammate Hunter York who had rounds of 73-73=146. Tyler Brown and Dustin Gosser share 23rd place in the field of 45 competitors. Brown carded scores of 73-76=149, while Gosser had 76-73=149.
William Hunt is six shots back of the leader Anthony Bradley of APSU who had scores of 77-71=137.
The Greystone course is playing 6,858 yards this week to a par of 72.
UT Martin is in fourth place with scores of 290-293=583, while Eastern Kentucky (291-293=584), Eastern Illinois (294-297=591), Morehead State (302-292=594), Tennessee Tech (305-300=605), Tennessee State (305-310=615).
The question that remains, is can the Racers find the game to erase a double-digit deficit again in Saturday's final round?
“We've got a shot and that's really what we wanted to have as the day start,” Hunt said. “You can make up some ground on this golf course. We have to get off to a good start.”
After falling out of the last pairings today, the Racers will again play in the final five groups on Saturday with leader APSU and JSU. MSU's Gosser leads off at 10:10 a.m., followed by Brown at 10:20 a.m. and York at 10:30 a.m. Newcomb plays at 10:40 a.m. and Hunt will be the anchor starting from the first tee at 10:50 a.m.
