Murray State softball is scheduled for five games in four days this week, hosting SIU Edwardsville in a mid-week doubleheader at home on Wednesday before playing its lone Friday/Saturday weekend series of the season, traveling to Cookeville, Tenn., for three games against Tennessee State.
The Racers dropped two of three games on the road this past weekend, losing both games on Saturday against Eastern Illinois before rebounding to win the final game of the series 3-0 Sunday afternoon. Shelby Kosmecki was masterful in the circle for the Racers in game three, dominating the Panthers to the tune of just two hits in seven shutout innings. The win keeps the Racers in fourth place in the OVC standings.
SCOUTING SIU EDWARDSVILLE
SIU Edwardsville comes into this week having defeated Eastern Illinois last Thursday, knocking off the Panthers 9-4 in a single contest. The win ended a four-game losing streak for the Cougars and was their second win in three games against EIU.
SIUE sits in 9th place in the OVC, two games out of the 6th and final OVC Championships spot with a 4-7 record in conference play this season.
They are led on offense by cleanup batter Alex McDavid, who paces the Cougars with a .352 batting average. She is tied for the team lead with 37 hits and leads the squad with 17 RBI and six doubles.
Amanda Lambrecht is the pitching staff's ace, starting 18 of 32 games this season. She holds a 9-8 record on the season, sporting a 3.35 ERA in 123.1 innings pitched, striking out 92 batters on the season.
The Racers and Cougars have played eight times over the past two seasons, with SIUE holding a 5-3 series advantage. Both teams have won one game at Racer Field, with MSU gaining a 9-1 victory in 2010 and SIU Edwardsville defeating the Racers 11-0 last season in Murray, Ky.
