Racer Golf Recruit Sophie Hillier Wins Bedfordshire Title

Murray State women's golf incoming freshman Sophie Hillier was a winner recently when she took the title of the Bedfordshire County Championship (May 12) at Bedford & County Golf Club in Bedfordshire, England.
Hillier started the event by shooting a 158 in two qualifying rounds that set her up for the match play portion of the event. In the first round of match play, Hillier defeated Allison Gorke 2&1, then followed with a 6&5 win over Fionna Cooper in the quarterfinals. Hillier capped off her title run with a 5&4 win over Pippa Willis in the semifinals and a championship win over Sally Shayler 3up.
The website for the Bedfordshire County Women's Golf Association wrote of Hillier's win.
“Normally there is about half an hour between the semi final and the final. This year there was a night's sleep. The number 1 and 2 qualifiers, Sally Shayler from Bedfordshire and Sophie Hillier from John O'Gaunt both started nervously. Sophie had the better of the early exchanges, going 2 up after 3. Both girls birdied 4 and parred 5 and 6. On the par 3 9th Sally was left with a tricky 6 foot downhill putt to stay 2 down. She holed it and then nailed her drive on 10. Sophie laid up to the ditch and Sal launched a fairway wood onto the green, then holed out for eagle. Back to 1. Her length told again on 11 where a birdie squared the match. An excellent up and down on 13 and an even better one on 14 gave Sophie the lead back before she holed a tricky 8 footer on 15 to halve and stay ahead. Sophie hit an uncharactertistically wayward drive on 17 into the trees. Sally was unable to hit the green in 2, and Sophie shaped her shot out of the trees and just short of the green. A tidy chip put all the pressure on Sal, who faced a 25 footer to stay alive. The line was perfect, but the putt ran out of steam and finished just short. Sophie was County Champion, a deserved winner who showed form all the way through the competition. Congratulations Sophie!”
Hillier will join the Racers in the fall as a freshman.
