Final Statistics
The Murray State Softball team recently concluded a successful 2012 season that saw them go another step closer to winning the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament Championship. In its third season, the Racer program improved its overall win total (34-21) and league total (19-11).
The Racers made it to the final day of the OVC Tournament (final three teams) before their run was ended.
Here are some of the accomplishments for the 2012 Racer Softball team.
MSU won 34 games in 2012 which marks their highest win total in three seasons since the program started in 2010. MSU won 22 games in 2010, 24 in 2011. MSU's 19 OVC wins was better than 2010 when they won 11 and 2011 when they posted 13 wins.
The Racers held their own this season against teams from power conferences. MSU defeated Mississippi 11-6 in the second game of the season (Feb. 19) and knocked off Missouri 3-2 (May 2). MSU was 2-2 and had an 8-0 loss to Tennessee (March 4) and a 5-4 loss to Missouri (May 2). MSU's win over Missouri was their first against a ranked opponent as the Tigers were No. 9.
MSU's 19-11 OVC mark featured five losses by one run. MSU finished the OVC season by winning 7-of-8 and overall they were 20-7 in the last weeks leading up to post-season play. In the OVC Tournament, MSU was the No. 4 seed and knocked off Eastern Kentucky 3-1 before they lost to No. 1 seed UT Martin 7-1. MSU bounced back with a 5-3 win over Jacksonville State before their run was ended in a 5-3 loss to Tennessee Tech. The Racers placed Mandi Kellerman and Shelby Kosmecki on the OVC All-Tournament Team.
The Racers ranked high in the OVC in several offensive and pitching categories. They were tops in team fielding (.963), shutouts (10) and stolen bases (91). MSU was second in runs scored (277), on base percentage (.364), slugging percentage (.410), RBI (241), ERA (2.53) and wins (34). MSU pitching struck out 284 batters for third-best in the league.
Individually, the Racers had some standouts as well. To start with, Casey Castile was MSU's first OVC Freshman of the Year after she hit .337 to go with 12 home runs, 46 RBI and 100 total bases. Castile was also MSU's first All-OVC First Team selection that wasn't a senior. Castile was also named All-Mideast Region Second Team by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association.
Megan Glosser was named All-OVC First Team and finished as the MSU all-time leader in batting average (.353), at-bats (509), runs (127) and hits (180). She was second in total bases (201).
Shelby Kosmecki was named All-OVC Second Team marking the first Racer pitcher to make all-league.
MSU's Chelsey Sullivan won MSU's first OVC Pitcher of the Week Award (April 9). She threw MSU's second no-hitter in a 14-0 win over Tennessee State (March 10). Sullivan was also named to the Margaret Simmons Female Athlete of the Year at MSU.
