Murray State rifle head coach Alan Lollar announced Tessa Howald will join the Racers' program in the fall as a freshman.
Howald comes to MSU from Ozark High School in Ozark, Mo.
"We are very excited to welcome Tessa to the Racer family,” Lollar said. “We think she fits in well and will quickly become an important part of this team."
Howald's shooting accomplishments include a four-year stint on the Ozark JROTC Rifle team that won three JROTC National Championships, twice in sporter rifle and once in precision rifle. Individually, Howald held multiple JROTC records in both classes. Howald won the gold medal at the Missouri State Jr. Olympics in Women's International in air rifle with a score of 390 out of a possible score of 400.
Howald participated in JROTC at Ozark and earned academic honors all four years of her high school career by maintaining a 3.8 GPA or higher.
'We lost one senior to normal graduation and two others graduated a year early,” Lollar added. “That leaves two obvious facts, we are going to be young again, and there will be opportunities to contribute right away. Tessa fits our idea of someone that can step in and contribute. I am looking forward to next year; we're going to grow the program."
Howald joins Kaitlyn Wilson (Boswell, Pa.), Hannah Harris (New Albany, Ind.), and Ryan Limpus (Franklin, Temm.) in the Racers' 2012 freshman class. Limpus was recently crowned the Tennessee State 3-position state champion.
"To go where we want to go, it will take special people, and I think that we have a core of very special people,” Lollar said. “One step at a time, the journey continues."
