Patrick Newcomb Begins Defense At Kentucky State Amateur

Murray State's Patrick Newcomb fired a 3-under-par 68 in round one of his defense of the Kentucky State Amateur Tuesday at the Cardinal Club in Simpsonville, Ky.
Newcomb, a senior in the fall at MSU, won the 100th State Am last summer and is trying for a second title this week in the state's biggest event for amateur golfers.
Newcomb made the turn in 2-under 33 after scoring an eagle on the par-4 6th hole that measures 316 yards. He shot 35 coming in with two birdies and a bogey. His first round score put him in first place in the field of 156 competitors. Newcomb is tied at the top with Jared Flanery, Taylor Riggs and Tyler Mitchell.
Three other current Racer golfers are in the field at the State Am this week. Sophomore Travis Thompson was in 52nd place with a 77, while senior to be, Hunter York was in 92nd place with a 78. Incoming freshmen, Preston French, Jared Gosser and Daniel Harper were in 119th and 131st and 150th place with scores of 81, 82 and 86.
A trio of former Racers is competing including, Kyle Shirley who was in 36th place after a 74. Current Murray State assistant women's golf Coach Chris Griffin was in 62nd place after a 76, while Josh Rhodes also had a 76.
The Kentucky State Amateur is playing the Cardinal Club to a par-71 and about 7,000 yards.
The second round is played on Tuesday with the top-70 and ties making the cut and advancing to Wednesday's final round.
