Newcomb Eyes Second Straight Kentucky Amateur Title

Murray State's Patrick Newcomb will be trying to win the Kentucky State Amateur for a second straight summer Thursday when he takes a two-shot lead into the final round the Cardinal Club in Simpsonville, Ky.
Newcomb carded a 4-under-par 67 in the second round on Wednesday to go with a first round 68 which was good for a 135 total and 7-under-par. The native of Benton, Ky., was two shots clear of Clay County High School sophomore Tyler McDaniel who shot rounds of 69-68=137.
A senior in the fall at MSU for Coach Eddie Hunt, Newcomb has made nine birdies and an eagle in the first 36 holes with only four bogeys.
Newcomb and McDaniel were set to tee off Thursday morning at the Cardinal Club at 9:09 a.m. CT.
Hunter York, also a senior in the fall at MSU and from Hardin, Ky., carded scores of 78-72-150 and was in 60th place among the 71 players that made the cut out of the starting field of 156.
Two former Racer golfers made the cut as well, with Kyle Shirley and Chris Griffin earning spots in 24th and 42nd place respectively. Shirley, from Scottsville, Ky., last played for Eddie Hunt in 2006 and turned in scores of 74-71=145. Griffin, currently assistant coach to Velvet Milkman with the MSU women's golf program, was in 42nd place with scores of 76-71=147.
Several other MSU players competed in the 101st edition of the Kentucky State Amateur but didn't make the cut. Sophomore Travis Thompson (Benton, Ky.) had scores of 77-81=158. Incoming Freshmen Jared Gosser (Russell Springs, Ky.) had scores of 82-72=154, while Preston French (Lexington, Ky.) carded scores of 81-83=164 and Daniel Harper (Murray, Ky.) had scores of 86-81=167. Former Racer Josh Rhodes (Paducah, Ky.) had scores of 76-80=156.
