Murray State women's golf incoming freshman Sophie Hillier added her second win of the summer when she won the Bedfordshire County Junior Championship (July 15) at Aspley Guise & Woburn Sands Golf Club in England.
Hillier, from Bedfordshire, had previously won the Bedfordshire County Open title in May.
In the junior championship, Hillier carded a 77 in a rain soaked day. She made the turn with a 39 before making a birdie at the 10th hole. She made her way home in 38 strokes to post a six-shot win.
The Bedfordshire County Ladies Golf Association reported that the event had one of the strongest fields they've had with several silver division players entered.
Hillier will join the Racers in the fall as a freshman.
The website for the Bedfordshire County Women's Golf Association wrote of Hillier's win.
Thunder and lightning were forecast, and although there were a few heavy showers, the organising committee breathed a sigh of relief that the Championship could be completed without any rain breaks.
With more silver division players than ever before, the 2012 Championship was one of the most keenly contested ever. Sophie Hillier was looking to add to her Ladies Championship, Katherine Carragher wanted to defend her title, Chloe Li wanted to go one better than being pipped on the last hole by a birdie last year, and Sophie Mills has been in cracking form all year. Anyone could have been forgiven for not watching the Wimbledon final.
The leading groups managed to get round the front 9 in the dry, with Sophie taking a slender lead to the turn, out in a very tidy 39 shots, with Katherine, Chloe, Sophie Mills and Bethany Healey all bunched behind her.
Sophie birdied the par 3 tenth, and continued to impress round the remainder of the back 9, even after it started raining, posting a fabulous 77. Bethany continued her good round, her net 72 taking the Nett Championship on countback from Sophie. Bethany's performance was particularly outstanding as she had to regroup after the worst possible start: playing the wrong ball on the first hole. Great resolve, Bethany!
Among the other highlights of the day was the 100 yard shot from Eleanor Thomas on the first - straight into the hole!
Well played everyone!
