Newcomb Begins Southern Am - Gosser Ends Run At KGA Match Play

Murray State golfer Patrick Newcomb began play Wednesday in the 106th Southern Amateur Championship in Little Rock, Ark., at Chenal Country Club and stood in 57th place after an opening 2-over-par 74.
Newcomb went out in 35 strokes on a front nine that was a bit of a roller coaster. The MSU senior this fall, recorded only three pars to go with two birdies, an eagle, one bogey and a double bogey. He came home in the final nine holes with a 39 to finish with a 74.
Newcomb, the Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Year and two-time Kentucky State Amateur champion, plays his second round Thursday.
The Southern Amateur has been played since 1902 and is organized by the Southern Golf Association. From 1902 to 1963, the event was contested at match play until it went to stroke play in 1964. Former champions of the event include this year's U.S. Open champion Webb Simpson who won the Southern title in both 2005 and 2008. Other past champions include Justin Leonard (1992, 1993), Ben Crenshaw (1973) and Bobby Jones (1920, 1922).
GOSSER'S RUN AT KGA MATCH PLAY ENDS IN QUARTERFINALS
MSU Golf incoming freshman Jared Gosser had a good run at the Kentucky Golf Association Match Play Championship in Prospect, Ky., at Hunting Creek Country Club, but it came to an end Wednesday with a loss in the quarterfinals.
Gosser (Russell Springs, Ky.) lost 1up to Jantzen Latham (Central City, Ky.) in a match where Gosser had a 2up lead with three holes to play.
Still the week was a great experience for Gosser in which he played well in 36 holes of stroke play and won two matches over a two-day stretch. Gosser had scores of 75-78=153 to qualify for the match play competition, then defeated Andy Roberts (Owensboro, Ky.) 5&4 and Cameron Fields (Bowling Green, Ky.) 19-up to reach the final-8.
Jared Gosser is coming to Murray State this fall to play for MSU men's golf coach Eddie Hunt, as his brother Dustin did, ending his career with the Racers last spring.
