Murray State golfer Patrick Newcomb made a move in Thursday's second round of the 106th Southern Amateur Championship in Little Rock, Ark., at Chenal Country Club when he went from 57th place to 33rd place as play continued into the afternoon and evening.
Newcomb (Benton, Ky.) used a bogey-free first nine to get home with a 1-under-par 71 after opening the event Wednesday with a 2-over-par 74. His 145 total put him in the hunt for one of golf's most prestigious amateur events.
Starting on the 10th hole, Newcomb went out with a 2-under-par 34 and made birdies at the 10th and 15th holes. But on his second nine holes, which was the front nine on Chenal's Bear Den Course, Newcomb had a five hole stretch that alternated bogey and birdie.
Newcomb plays his third round Friday.
The Southern Amateur has been played since 1902 and is organized by the Southern Golf Association. From 1902 to 1963, the event was contested at match play until it went to stroke play in 1964. Former champions of the event include this year's U.S. Open champion Webb Simpson who won the Southern title in both 2005 and 2008. Other past champions include Justin Leonard (1992, 1993), Ben Crenshaw (1973) and Bobby Jones (1920, 1922).
