Newcomb Moves Into Top-10 At Southern Amateur

Murray State golfer Patrick Newcomb started the day in 29th place and ended it in ninth as he finished his third round of the 106th Southern Amateur Championship in Little Rock, Ark., at Chenal Country Club with a 3-under-par 69.
Newcomb (Benton, Ky.) has improved his score over 54-holes with rounds of 74-71-69=214.
The senior in the fall for MSU, Newcomb started on hole-1 and posted a 2-under-par 34 on the front nine which included four birdies. He had two birdies on the back nine to get in with a 35.
For the three rounds, Newcomb is 10-under-par on Chenal's par-5 holes. He made birdies at three of them in his third round.
Newcomb plays his final round Saturday at the Bear Den course that is playing to a par of 72 and a length of 7,326 yards.
The Southern Amateur has been played since 1902 and is organized by the Southern Golf Association. From 1902 to 1963, the event was contested at match play until it went to stroke play in 1964. Former champions of the event include this year's U.S. Open champion Webb Simpson who won the Southern title in both 2005 and 2008. Other past champions include Justin Leonard (1992, 1993), Ben Crenshaw (1973) and Bobby Jones (1920, 1922).
