Round of 16
Murray State senior Patrick Newcomb's historic run at the 2012 United States Golf Association U.S. Amateur Championship at Cherry Hills Village, Colo., came to a close Thursday evening with a 3 & 2 loss to California-Berkeley junior Brandon Hagy in the round of 16.
The Benton, Ky., native fell behind on the first hole and was never able to recover, despite rallying on several occasions. Hagy led 3-up after seven holes, but Newcomb steadily chipped away at the lead until he trailed by just one through 14. However, Hagy made par on the 15th hole and birdied the 16th to wrap-up the match 3 & 2.
Newcomb was one of 14 collegiate players to advance to the round of 16 and was just one five to come from a school outside of a BCS conference.
He returns to Murray State where the Racers will launch their 2012-2013 campaign (Sep. 10) at Morehead State's Wasiota Winds Fall Kick-Off. Newcomb put together an outstanding summer in which he won the Kentucky Amateur for a second straight time. He also won his qualifier in Macon, Ga., that pushed him into the US Am. Newcomb finished in the top-15 at the Southern Amateur and also was the winner of the West Kentucky Amateur.
"I'm disappointed that I wasn't able to advance, but I can't be unhappy with what I was able to do this week,' Newcomb said. “The US Am has the best field of players and I was glad that I competed with them and had success.”
Round of 32
Earlier on Thursday, Newcomb won his round of 32 match against Auburn senior Michael Hebert (Alpharetta, Ga.). Newcomb overcame a 3-down deficit with seven holes remaining to force a playoff and ultimately win 1-up in 19 holes.
Newcomb won the 12th, 14th and 15th holes shooting par to make things all square. After dropping the 17th hole with a double bogey he would respond on the 18th with a par to win the hole and force the sudden death playoff.
On the 19th hole, Newcomb made bogey again but Hebert recorded a double bogey to give Newcomb the victory.
Round of 64
Patrick Newcomb won his opening match when he defeated Richard Lamb 2-up on Wednesday afternoon.
Newcomb, a senior for the Racers in the fall, overcame an early deficit to get the win against his opponent from the University of Tennessee.
After each player made par on the first three holes, Lamb (South Bend, Ind.) made a birdie at the 4th hole to take a 1-up lead. Newcomb drew even on the 5th hole when he made par and took his first lead of the day at the 6th when he made a par and Lamb made a second straight bogey. Both players bogeyed the 8th and 9th and Lamb squared the match again with a birdie at the 10th. The match turned in Newcomb's favor when he birdied the par-5 11th and the par-3 12th to take a 2-up lead. Newcomb played solid over the next five holes as he matched Lamb with pars.
For the 17 holes of the match, Newcomb was even par and Lamb was 3-over-par.
“I hit the ball extremely well today after not playing so great in the stroke rounds,” Newcomb said. “In my mind I was lucky to get into that playoff in the first place, so to come out today and get the opportunity to play, I was excited. I hit 14 of 17 greens today, but didn't make a lot of putts. Even par on this course is a good score.”
US Amateur – Stroke Play Segment
Murray State's Patrick Newcomb survived a 17-way playoff to advance to the match play segment of the 2012 United States Golf Association U.S. Amateur Championship at Cherry Hills Village, Colo.
Newcomb, a senior this fall with the MSU men's golf team, carded rounds of 74-69=143 over two days of stroke play and managed to get into a playoff Wednesday morning that awarded 14 spots in match play from the 17 competitors. Newcomb made a par on the first hole to secure his spot and the starting field of 312 players was finally trimmed down to 64.
The US Amateur is being contested in the Denver area on two golf courses. Cherry Hills Country Club is playing to a par of 71 and 7,409 yards, while the Common Ground Golf Course is playing 7,378 yards at a par of 70.
The U.S. Amateur is one of 13 national championships conducted annually by the United States Golf Association, 10 of which are strictly for amateurs.
Newcomb (Benton, Ky.) qualified for the finals after he won the sectional stage (July 31) in Macon, Ga.
