Racer Women's Golf Ready For 2012-13 Season

The Murray State women's golf team hits the road for their 2012-13 season opener when they compete at the Chris Bannister Classic hosted by Jacksonville State at Silver Lakes Golf Club in Jacksonville, Ala., Sunday through Tuesday.
The Racers tee it up at the Silver Lakes course that plays to a par of 72.
Murray State head coach Velvet Milkman, the only coach the Racer program has ever had enters her 20th season.
“I'm excited about the group we've put together and looking forward to getting the season going,” Milkman said. “It's great to get the season going, our team is excited to play.”
After finishing second in last spring's Ohio Valley Conference Championship, Milkman believes this edition of Racer Golf has a chance to contend for the title again. The Racers have won eight league titles with the last coming in 2010. Seniors Alli Weaver (Lititz, Pa.) and Alexandra Lennartsson (Nykoping, Sweden) along with junior Delaney Howson (Newmarket, Ontario) lead the way for MSU. Freshmen Sophie Hillier (Bedfordshire, Egland) and Abbi Stamper (Frankfort, Ky.) round out the Racers' starting five at JSU.
“That pair of seniors and Delaney has shown they can play with anybody in the OVC and we're going to need them to play well to be successful,” Milkman added. “Experience means a lot in this game and they know how to play.”
Freshman Ashlyn Bechtold (Paducah, Ky.) and sophomore Gina Nuzzo (Louisville, Ky.) will play the JSU event as individuals.
MSU has five events this fall with the first this weekend at Jacksonville. The other tournaments are at Mississippi State (Sep. 10-12), Austin Peay (Oct. 15-16) and Middle Tennessee (Oct. 22-23). The Racers host their own event at Drake Creek Golf Club in Ledbetter, Ky. (Sep. 17-18).
At Jacksonville State, the Racers are joined by Belmont, Lamar Lipscomb, Northern Kentucky, Middle Tennessee, Tennessee Tech and Texas State.
The Racers are in the JSU event for the first time since 2008 when they placed fifth.
