The Murray State women's golf team opened the 2012-13 season Sunday with their first round at the Chris Bannister Classic at Silver Lakes Golf Club in Glencoe, Ala.
MSU carded a 301 and stood in third place in the field of 10 teams, just three shots off the lead of Texas State (298) and two shots from second place Middle Tennessee (299). MSU was three shots clear of fourth place Lamar (304). The rest of the field was rounded out by fifth place and host, Jacksonville State (313), Western Kentucky (321), Belmont (328), Tennessee Tech (334), Lipscomb (338) and Northern Kentucky (339).
Alexandra Lennartsson led the Racers with an even par 72 for second place in the field of 61 competitors. MSU's Delaney Howson was in fourth place after a 74. Alli Weaver stood in 11th place with a 76, while a 79 from Sophie Hillier put her in 20th position and Abbi Stamper was in 23rd place with an 80.
Lennartsson was two shots off the pace being set by leader Ashley Haggard of MTSU who carded a 70.
MSU has Gina Nuzzo and Ashlyn Bechtold playing the event as individuals. Nuzzo's 80 was good for a spot in 23rd place with teammate Stamper, while Bechtold was in 55th place after an 89.
The Racers were paired with JSU and Belmont in the opening round. The 54-hole event plays the second round Monday and the final round on Tuesday.
Murray State is in the JSU tournament for the first time since 2008 when they placed fifth and looking for their second win after taking the title in 2002.
