French Wins Murray State Invitational

Murray State's Preston French became the first medalist of the season Tuesday for the Racers after winning the 10th Annual Murray State Invitational at Miller Memorial Golf Course in Murray, Ky. French marks the third Racer in tournament history to take home the individual title with scores of 69-68-70=207.
The Racers finished fourth overall with scores of 283-289-289=861. Murray State finished behind tournament winner Lipscomb (857). The Bisons captured the crown after a dramatic two-hole team play-off with Alabama State. The second hole became necessary after a two-stroke penalty was assessed to Lipscomb, thus tying the scores and forcing the playoff to continue. Â Eastern Kentucky finished in third with a score of 860.
Jared Gosser had the next best finish for the Racers after carding scores of 68-72-72=212 to tie for fourth place. T.J. Ferry had scores of 75-73-73=221 for 30th place while Duncan McCormick shot 71-76-77=224. Rounding out the scoring for MSU was Jordan Smith, with scores of 75-77-74.
The Murray State "B" team tied for eighth place with Tennessee Tech in the field of 14 teams with a score of 890. Chasten Howard led the group with scores of 72-70-72=214 for eighth place. Brock Simmons carded 72-71-78=221, while Matt Zakutney had scores of 76-77-73=226. Rounding out the field for the second group Racers was Daniel Harper (72-77-80=229) and Travis Thompson (81-78-81=240).
Other team scores included UT Martin (861), Belmont (867), Morehead State (884), Western Illinois (892), Union (TN) (900), John A. Logan (906), UT Martin "B" (919) and Bethel (TN) (936).
The Miller Memorial course played to a par of 71 and 6,601 yards.
The Racers will be back in action Oct. 7 for the 7th Annual Skyhawk Classic hosted by UT Martin at the Paris Landing State Park in Paris, Tenn.Â
